Biography

Niamh is a Professor of Health Geographies and co-director of the Centre for Environment, Society and Health (CRESH). Her research considers how the environment shapes our health, health behaviours and resulting health inequalities. She focuses on the effect of place and in particular the idea of the locale in which various aspects of the social and natural environment converge to influence health outcomes. Based on the premise that place matters for health, her research explores a wide range of area effects and considers the implications for health. Niamh’s current work focusses on alcohol and tobacco environments in Scotland and the role of retail density. Niamh’s research has been funded by NERC, ESRC and CSO and she is currently involved with grants from EPSRC and ERC.
