Personal profile


I began my teaching career as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) on the JET (Japan Exchange Teaching) Programme in Japan in 2001. Since then, most of my teaching experience has been in Japan. For two years, I worked in primary and secondary schools alongside Japanese English teachers. After gaining my MSc in TESOL, I returned to Japan in 2004 to work at Kanda University of International Studies, where I worked as a Senior Lecturer and Research Coordinator. In 2010, I joined The Department of Global Business at Rikkyo University in Tokyo. As the EAP Course Leader, I was responsible for curriculum design and evaluation. I was also involved in negotiating overseas study abroad contracts and conducting programme evaluation, as well as ESP curriculum design and evaluation. I joined Moray House School of Education in February 2012.

Current Research Interests

My main research interest is in the field of Global Englishes. My PhD thesis, An investigation of Japanese students` attitudes towards English, stemmed from an interest in Global Englishes, English education and students’ current English Language Teaching (ELT) needs. It offered an analysis of students' attitudes towards English and ELT in an Expanding Circle context from a fresh perspective. It looked at their attitudes towards English and learning the language, what factors influence these attitudes and how a course in Global Englishes can influence these attitudes. The study employed a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative measures (questionnaires, interviews and focus groups).

I am currently mainly interested in researching attitudes towards English in relation to GE. I am also very interested in curriculum evaluation and design and in the development of materials to raise awareness of GE.

Standard language ideology in diverse contexts

This study explores the connection between attitudes towards English and ones own language, as well as the promotion of standard language ideology in Japan and in similar contexts.

English-medium universities in Japan

This large-scale, longitudinal collaborative project with Dr. Heath Rose from Trinity College, Dublin, is an evaluation of an English-medium business programme. The first part of this study uses data collected over a four-year time period from 750 students who have passed through the Bachelor of Business programme. It also uses data obtained from interviews with students and business content instructors, plus feedback from potential future employers, which further highlights the program’s successes and failures. This study also includes an investigation into the effectivess of Content Based Instruction (CBI) in the Japanese context as well as the incorporation of a GE based approach, including an examination of the effectiveness of hiring international student assistants as classroom helpers. The fourth part of this study involves investigating the students' use of English in their international business careers after graduation and their attitudes towards whether or not their previous education prepared them for using English as a Lingu Franca.
