Accepting PhD Students
Pam Smith was appointed Professorial Fellow in Nursing Studies, the School of Health in Social Science at the University of Edinburgh in November 2012. Her appontment followed a period of secondment (2009-2012) as Professor of Nurse Education from the University of Surrey. From August 2010 to December 2013, Pam was Head of Nursing Studies. She is currently a Visiting Professor at the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, King's College London and Honorary Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor, Slovenia.
As the General Nursing Council (GNC) Trust Endowed Chair in Nurse Education at the University of Surrey, (2002-2008) Pam was the Director of the Centre for Research in Nursing and Midwifery Education. She has also held research leadership roles at London South Bank University (1997-2001) and Bloomsbury (later Camden and Islington) Health Authority (1985-1992). During this time she set up strong research links between education, research and practice.
Pam obtained her PhD from King's College (1988), her MSc in Medical Sociology from Bedford College (1982) and a postgraduate certificate in adult education from Garnett College (1973), London University.
She is a graduate of the University of Manchester’s Bachelor of Nursing Programme. The experience was a truly holistic one putting people at the centre of care across the lifespan, in hospital and home. Pam has been a nurse and teacher in Tanzania, Mozambique and Britain and a nurse researcher in Britain and the USA. Following doctoral studies at Kings College London she spent a post-doctoral year with Professor Arlie Russell Hochschild at the University of California at Berkeley, developing the application of emotional labour to nursing.
Pam is committed to translating the research on emotional labour into evidence based practice through doctoral supervision, teaching and clinically based research. Past projects include hosting Nicola White, Leverhulme Writer in Residence; Exploring how nurses manage emotions in intensive care settings; Enabling older peoples' voices to be heard across three decades; and Investigating the transitions experienced by professionals and parents caring for children with cancer.
