Dr Patricio Troncoso is a Lecturer in Youth Studies. Patricio is an applied statistician with a background in Sociology, Public Policy and Education research. His research focuses on a range of children’s outcomes and experiences, including educational inequalities in attainment, school behaviour and attendance, school value-added, social care and protection, mental health as well as social and emotional learning and development.
Patricio joined the University of Edinburgh in 2024. Prior to joining UoE, he was a Research Fellow at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow (2023-2024). His latest research was focused on the "Understanding children’s lives and outcomes" strand of the ESRC-funded Scottish Centre for Administrative Data Research (SCADR). Previously, he also held posts at Heriot-Watt University (2021-2023), as well as the Manchester Institute of Education and the Department of Social Statistics at the University of Manchester (2016-2020).
I am interested in conducting research on all aspects of children and young people's (and their families) lives and experiences, with a special emphasis on how socio-economic inequalities affect a range of educational and non-educational outcomes, including school attainment and value-added, school absence and exclusions, social care and protection, social and emotional learning, mental health and wellbeing, etc.
I have mainly used quantitative data arising from longitudinal surveys, administrative records and randomised controlled trials. The methods applied to these are varied and include: Multilevel Modelling, Longitudinal Analysis, Latent Variable modelling and Structural Equations.
