Research Interests

Dr Hall's research interests reside at the interface between Medical Oncology, Health Economics and Clinical Research. They include:

  • Economic evaluation of new interventions for cancer
  • Bayesian decision analysis for efficient research design
  • Economic evaluation of biomarkers and personalised medicine strategies
  • The use of routine NHS data through clinical informatics to measure the costs of care
  • Methods for the measurement of the financial burden of cancer on patients and carers
  • Outcomes measurement in elderly cancer patients

His aspiration is to improve clinical outcomes of research to provide robust evidence for the real-world evaluation of new interventions for cancer

Biography

A Medical Oncologist with a research interest in and Health Economics, he holds a position as a Senior Clinical Lecturer in Cancer Informatics at the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, University of Edinburgh. He is also Visiting Associate Professor of Health Economics with the Academic Unit of Health Economics at the University of Leeds. 

The focus of his research is on improved methods for efficient research design, cost-effectiveness analysis and the measurement of clinical and socioeconomic outcomes using data obtained from research and routinely collected within the NHS. 

He is Chief-Investigator, clinical co-investigator or lead Health Economist on a number of clinical trials and methods projects. He leads the Health Economics Group within the University of Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit. He is a Visiting Associate Professor of Health Economics at the Academic Unit of Health Economics, University of Leeds where he completed a PhD in health economic modelling. He is a NICE Appraisal Committee member and advises the Innovative Healthcare Delivery Programme Scotland at the Farr Institute. He treats patients with breast cancer at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre.
