Biography

Roly Megaw is an academic ophthalmologist with a clinical and research interest in the inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs), a group of untreatable, monogenic conditions that are the leading cause of visual loss in children and working adults.

He runs the IRD service in NHS Lothian and is a PI for interventional clinical trials (gene therapy, exon skipping therapy) and natural history studies, amongst others.

His research lab uses animal and stem cell models to better understand the pathogenesis of IRDs and define the pathways disrupted in disease that eventually lead to retinal degeneration, with the ultimate aim of identifying novel therapies.
