Biography

Sandra holds a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany (2012). Before, she worked for several years as a risk and portfolio manager in the financial sector. From 2012 to 2019, she held a position as senior researcher at the University of Malta's Department of Cognitive Science. She has worked on several large-scale collaborative projects (FP7, H2020), developing project proposals and conducting quantitative, qualitative and experimental research.

Sandra’s specific focus is on applied research, and in her project work she has collaborated with a large range of academic and non-academic partners, in particular Law Enforcement, Human Rights Agencies and Civil Protection. In the area of risk perception and fear, her work has contributed to the development of a community policing app that was implemented across Europe. Her collaborative work on surveillance has contributed to the development of EU model laws; her research on citizens’ feelings and perception of online privacy informed briefs to the European Commission, which influenced the reform of EU data protection rules. Her most recent research within the H2020 project CARISMAND (Culture And RISk perception in Man-made And Natural Disasters), which brought together disaster managers and members of the general public via stakeholder assemblies and citizen summits across Europe, provided the basis for developing a toolkit for disaster managers that helps using cultural factors in effective disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

From 2019 to 2020 she worked as an Impact Research Fellow for the University of Edinburgh's Department of Social Anthropology, working with colleague researchers to develop and improve impact case studies for the REF2021 submission. To further promote impact-related research and thinking, Sandra has most recently (03/2020) taken up the position as Knowledge Exchange & Impact Manager for UoE's School of Social and Political Science.
