My Projects:

1) LHCb RICH photon detector M&O:

• leading the maintenance the Hybrid Photon Detectors of the LHCb Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors for their lifetime in the experiment

• leading the R&D for the improvement of HPD production procedure to suppress Ion Feedback in the HPDs

2) LHCb RICH photon detector upgrade:

• leading the characteriseation of Multianode Photomultiplier (MaPMT) tubes to qualify for their use as photon detectors in the LHCb RICH upgrade

• leading the development of the Quality Assurance facilities to series test O(4000) MaPMT and to assemble them into front-end modules for their use in the LHCb RICH upgrade

3) ATLAS pixel detecor R&D and design for the Phase II upgrade:

• participating in the R&D and design effort for the front-end module of the Forward Pixel Disk detector - building up the contributions by the Edinburgh PPE group: front-end chip (FE-I4X) testing, flex tape design and testing, module building

• participating in the layout and design studies and contributing to the R&D effort for the mechanical half-disks carrying the fromt-end modules of the Forward Pixel Disk detector

• leading the Forward Pixel Disk Services task, responsible for all signal and supply lines between the front-end modules and Patch Panel 1 - studying material and routing options, defining the interfaces and negotiating the boundaries to the neighbouring detector components and contributing to the overall integration of the Inner Tracking detectors (all silicon pixel and strip detectors)

4) Silicon Sensor studies:

• radiation damage study of n-type magentic Czochralsky diodes, to investigate different ageing behaviour compared to Float Zone diodes under proton irradiation

• mapping of photon detection efficiency acorss 3D sensors, employing full depth through silicon vias

5) further laboratory development:

• responsible for the development of capabilities and capacities of the Edinburgh PPE group to contribute to future detector development of High Energy Physics projects

I have no formal teaching obligations, but regard teaching as valuable and rewarding in several ways.

On voluntary basis therefore:

1) I have tought the 'Electronics Methods in the Physical Laboratory' 3rd year lecture series and laboratory

   (this course now has ceased due to the reorganisation of the curriculum, and the distribution of its contents over several years)

2) I am organising the SUPADET lecture course on Particle Physics Detectors, which is part of the SUPA graduate school, present a good half of the course content (everything but the solid state detectors, which are covered by my Glasgow colleagues Richard Bates and Andrew Blue) and am responsible for the course assessment

3) I am co-developing the new 'Data Acquisition and Handling' course, which is due to be offered from Academic Year 2014/15

4) I am supervising students on all levels: PhD, MSc, MPhys, 4th year projects, summer students
