Research Interests

I work on the design and analysis of complex systems and how we ensure they are fit for purpose. This includes both demonstrating fitness and influencing design in practice. This is crucial in the context of safety-critical or dependable systems where any failure can have unacceptable consequences. My goal is to analyse and transform the practice of: system design, deployment and use in order to create systems that evidently justify the trust we put in them. The management and perception of risk and trust is a recurring theme in this work.

Qualifications

1974 BSc in Computer Science, Herriot-Watt University

Biography

Stuart Anderson is a professor of Dependable Systems at Edinburgh, joining Edinburgh University in 1986. Between 1979 and 1986 Stuart was a lecturer in Computer Science at Heriot-Watt University, taking a leave of absence to take up a visiting researcher position at the Programming Methodology Group, led by Bengt Nordstom and Jan Smith at Gothenburgh University.

Stuart is particularly interested in socio-technical systems, resilience of such systems and how Social Science and Informatics provide a unique perspective on the conception, design, deployment and operation of computer-based systems. The Social Informatics Cluster in Edinburgh works closely with members of ISSTI and with the Edinburgh e-Health Interdisciplinary group. Currently we are working on Information Infrastructures and their role in analysing long-lived, large-scale systems. Stuart is also interested in Social Computation and Collective Adaptive Systems and recently has been working jointly with NHS24 and other Scottish Agencies on the development of a Digital Health Institute designed to stimulate innovation and knowledge exchange.
