Prof. Magdy’s expertise areas are:
Computational Social Science
Social content analysis, political bias detection, polarisation, and users' behavior analysis/prediction, with more focus on understudied communities.Natural Language Processing
Social NLP (sentiment, sarcasm, hate-speech detection) with special focus on underserved languages (e.g. Arabic and its dialects and Persian).Walid Magdy is a professor at the school of Informatics, the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and the founder and director of the social media analysis and support for humanity (SMASH) group. His main research interests include natural language processing (NLP) and computational social science (CSS). He has an extensive industrial background from working earlier for IBM, Microsoft, and QCRI. Walid has over 150 peer-reviewed published articles in top tier conferences and journals and a set of 9 patents filed under his name. Some of his work was featured in popular press, such as CNN, BBC, Washington Post, National Geographic, and MIT Tech reviews.
