My research in a nutshell

My research programme has four (overlapping) strands:

  1. cognitive linguistic theory (with respect to grammar, prominently including word classes);
  2. the interdisciplinary area of cognitive sociolinguistics;
  3. foreign language learning and teaching;
  4. the connection between language and mental health.

I am mainly a theoretical linguist (strands 1-2) but have recently started to branch out into applied directions (3-4). Peers value my work for its strong empirical basis and the breadth of theoretical insights I draw on from within linguistics and beyond, especially cognitive psychology and social cognition.
