Laura Harty and Adrian Hawker are programme directors for the BA/MA (Hons) Architecture and Master of Architecture programmes in ESALA/ECA. Laura and Adrian showed exceptional initiative throughout 2021-22 in preparation for ESALA’s accreditation visit by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). ESALA’s professional architectural programmes undergo accreditation visits by a RIBA visiting board in maintenance of professional validation. RIBA validation visits take place only once every five years. These visits involve significant labour and preparation, but also significant skill and creativity in the presentation of the strengths of our approach to education to a professional audience. Laura and Adrian worked exceptionally hard and with great care in coordinating a broad selection of student work for RIBA to review. They articulated the future directions of the programmes, indicating how they would adapt to the changing regulator environments—they focussed specifically on how architectural education can proactively address challenges posed by the climate crisis. Laura and Adrian prepared an exhibition of student work for the RIBA visiting board, which displayed the range of activities that our students undertake. Thanks to the efforts Laura and Adrian put into preparations for the RIBA visit, and their successful leadership of ESALA’s programmes, the RIBA visiting board conferred unconditional revalidation on our school, which is a recognition of the international excellence of our approach to education. The effort that went in to supporting the RIBA visiting board was over and above the normal expectations for a programme director, and Laura and Adrian approached it with collegiality and inventiveness.
