A Cultural History of Archaic and Classical Ionia

Project Details

Description

The history of ancient Ionia during the Archaic and Classical periods is stuck in rut. Scholars reprise the same handful of sources with minimal new criticism and pay little serious attention to up-to-date material evidence. Ionia was central, spatially and culturally, to the history of Classical Greece. Yet it has been side-lined in general accounts. A Cultural History of Archaic and Classical Ionia will enlist newly collected primary archaeological data to offer novel, holistic narratives of daily life and cultural forms. It will allow us to move beyond narrow stories of elite heroism and conflict between east and west.
