Description

Funds to develop a hydrogen-proof gas loader for large volume pressure cells.

Layman's description

Hydrogen is extremely difficult to load into pressure cells. It must be compressed to 2000 atmospheres. At this pressure it diffuses into materials like steel causing them to become brittle and to lose their strength. This project provided funds to develop and test a machine to load hydrogen into pressure cells suitable for neutron diffraction using the ISIS neutron source. This capability is currently the only one in the world.
