Project Details
Description
This project will reassess the impact of Rome in northern Britain, applying an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approach to identify changes and continuities in Iron Age settlement patterns and lifestyles. It combines the newest information from high-resolution LiDAR data, environmental sequences and radiocarbon analysis with the rationalisation of existing information and a programme of geophysical surveys. Adopting a long-term perspective, the project will challenge previous narratives and overcome the traditional divide between late prehistoric and Roman archaeology. The outcomes will be relevant for the study region and more broadly for understanding encounters at the edges of imperial powers.
