Synthesis of nanometre scale organic building units to be combined with ‘C[4]-supported’ polynuclear cluster motifs to afford novel families of discrete metal-organic superstructures and MOFs. The established concepts of crystal engineering can be logically applied to the combination of proposed building units to controllably form targeted superstructures and frameworks. The synthesis of nanometre scale organic building units that possess internal volumes of controlled size is meritorious given that such species can display fascinating host-guest properties.
