At the beginning of the 21st century, we are witnessing the enormous changes in the way the biological researches are carried out. It could be distinguished by the analysis of huge amount of data, obtained by modern high-throughput methods and integration of these data with computational models of various complexity to gain a new knowledge about biological system structure, functions and behaviour. The information exchange becomes a key point for scientific progression in those circumstances. To facilitate communications between biologist, medics, tool developers and computer scientists we have developed The Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN) as a standard based upon visual languages enabling the graphical representation of biological processes.
The development of the standard was a highly collaborative process from the very beginning. The standard development community is a vibrant and diverse group of developers, theoreticians and end-users from all around the world. Participants of SBGN-9 meeting held in Edinburgh in the May 2013 were coming from USA, UK, Germany, Canada, Japan.
The international systems biology community has high regard for the value of the new standard. The acceptance of our efforts could be demonstrated by the fact that SBGN is mentioned in more than 800 papers so far
