Coordinated Action Ocean Energy (CAOE EU FP6). European Laboratory Access

Project Details

Description

Title: Coordinated Action Ocean Energy (CAOE EU FP6). European Laboratory Access
Date: October 2007
Value: £1500

This research project took place in October 2007 with the goal of installing and testing a novel sensor in a large 3D wave basin located at the Hydraulics and Coastal Engineering Laboratory, Aalborg University, Denmark. At-sea testing at Nissum Bredning, Denmark was considered, however technical problems at the site ruled this out.

The prototype sensor was trialled in the flume and basin facilities of the host institution. This work was disseminated to the School of Engineering upon returning to Edinburgh through a seminar. The merits of a previous short course on experimental testing held in Aalborg (see below) were highlighted during this seminar resulting in several early stage Edinburgh PhD students applying to join the December 2007 course.

Key findings

These early tank trials led to design changes in subsequent sensor variants and helped shape the submission of a successful EPSRC proposal to further develop the technology.
