Project Overview: SRJ Scotland
The SRJ Scotland project consisted of a series of focused partnership- and idea-generation activities designed to support the development of an innovative sexual and reproductive health (SRH) policy and research agenda in Scotland, informed by a reproductive justice (RJ) framework.
The project, which began in early 2024, capitalised on a diversity of existing relationships, bringing together interdisciplinary and cross-sector partners in an innovative way to explore opportunities to address key SRH policy gaps. Taking abortion and contraception as an initial focus (concentrating on key concerns in the Scottish context), this work was intended to generate early-stage proposals for collaborative research plans and form building blocks for a broader programme of work around SRH justice within Scotland and across the UK. Aligning with current policy concerns, the project supported new developments to address urgent issues in contemporary policy and practice.
The project was led by Carrie Purcell (Open University in Scotland), in collaboration with Julie Riddell (University of Glasgow), Ingrid Young (University of Edinburgh), Nicola Boydell (University of Edinburgh), and Ruth Lewis (University of Glasgow).
All project activities were supported by the futures-oriented design agency AndThen, who had extensive expertise in public sector policy and strategy co-development.
The May 2024 workshop was coordinated by the Interdisciplinary Research in Sexual Health Network Scotland (IReSH). Participants were drawn from a broad range of organisations and individuals with an interest in sexual and reproductive health policy and practice in Scotland.
The project was funded through the Open University in Scotland Innovation Fund and University of Edinburgh Centre for Biomedicine Self and Society (CBSS) Engagment Fund.
