European Writing on the Art of the United States

Project Details

Description

This project focuses on the reception of the art of the United States of America in the non-English language writings by art historians, philosophers, art critics and artists in Continental Europe between ca. 1945 and 1990. It is a special initiative of the editors of Art in Translation, Claudia Hopkins and Iain Boyd Whyte, in collaboration with an expert panel on US art. Seed-funding has been provided by the Terra Foundation for American Art. This will enable a workshop on the reception of US art on 14-15 October at CASVA, Washington D.C.
The final outcome of the project will be an anthology of key primary sources on US art, translated into English for the first time, and augmented by scholarly introductory essays.
