Project Details

The Women In Sound Women On Sound network (WISWOS) is an
international hub of networks and individuals, including artists,
researchers, technologists, musicians, archivists with an interest in
sound, technology and education. Dr Rebecca Collins is the coorganiser
of the network alongside Dr Linda O Keeffe. WISWOS
identifies the need for action to tackle issues of inequality and
gender bias in sound and music technology. One of the ongoing
objectives for WISWOS is to geographically map women's
contribution to the sonic arts and use this knowledge to further
understand issues of gender repression within the UK. This small
grant will mark the beginning of an investigation which aims to
open debate and critique on how knowledge is acquired and shared
within the sonic arts thereby challenging the construction of
western knowledge and its male dominated perspectives. This work will be of interest to educationalists, activists, policy makers, curators, international arts organisations, artists and others.
