Haunting in Jess Kidd's Himself

Project Details

Description

Kidd's first novel, Himself, offers a rewriting of JM Synge's Playboy of the Western World, now set in Mayo in the 1970s in the genre of a murder mystery cum supernatural thriller. Looking at this text through the lens of folklore studies and haunting provides a deeper rereading, one that allows Kidd to grapple with the horrific and repressive 20th century history of Ireland, from mother and baby homes to overemphasis on modernist canonical writers to the politics of small towns.
