Industrial-scale manufacturing of heat-powered chillers for energy efficient data centres

Project Details

Description

Data centres use an equivalent of ~5% of the global renewable electricity; this could quadruple by 2030 boosted by the uptake of smart solutions in everyday life. They have to commit ~40% of the energy input to cooling, because of the transformation of electricity into heat. Interestingly, this formidable heat emission is an opportunity for an emerging technology able to transform heat into cold with no extra electricity, displacing the current more energy-intensive cooling technology. Despite the promise, the lack of a symbiotic academia-industry partnership has prevented this technology from progressing to higher readiness levels. This Industry Fellowship involves the academic Principal Investigator in techniques of industrial manufacturability of a proof-of-concept cooler originated in his laboratory; drive innovation from the laboratory to industry, and place SunAmp Ltd in a highly favourable position to secure investment for growth and commercialisation of the technology.
