Other Details:
Iron is an element. A pure entity. It features ubiquitously in nature, industry, architecture and art. It was born in type-A supernovas around the start of time. It has a pivotal role in animal / insect navigation and exists in our bodies as a crucial regulator. Iron forms the massive core of the planet below our feet. This material is under exploited and explored especially in contemporary fine art practice and has huge potential to ‘speak’.

Ironfield aims to explore by diverse and engaging means the ongoing expressive, philosophical and contextual potential of the material. It will also start to map, contextualise and disseminate this information.

Initial funding has supported the production, transport and exhibition of work in exhibitions in London, Edinburgh and Germany creating a research platform for future more detailed and wide-ranging exploratory sculptural, philosophical and material investigations under the Ironfield project. The initial sculptural work, Cloud Dialogue, is a series of cast iron objects existing as nodes in an interchangeable physically interconnected molecular-type ‘cloud’. This varies according to each exhibiting context and the selected component parts. Each venue offers differing contexts and audience engagement opportunities that will be employed in each locale. This ongoing artwork will help anchor written texts and key ideas as well as promote divergent iron thinking and will be used as a vehicle for focusing audience ‘inroads’, teaching and conclusions.

This project is ongoing and open to very diverse and fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration. The physical production and exhibition of sculptural works has been achieved (as well as research -led teaching) as planned, ongoing venues, events and funding are being sought.
