Data obtained from this project showed that changes in the strength of synaptic inputs (points of communication between neurones) in the hippocampus, a region of the brain associated with learning and memory could occur independently of the soma (cell body) but still in a protein synthesis-dependent manner. This indicated that protein synthesis required for changes in synaptic strength could occur "locally" in the vicinity of the synapse and did not require the soma.
