Key findings

Optical vortices are used to trap and manipulate small objects, such as cells.
The first mathematical models and mathematical understanding of the evolution
and stability of optical vortices in nematic liquid crystals has been developed.
The results of this mathematical modelling are found to be in excellent
agreement with numerical solutions. It has been shown how optical beams
can stabilise optical vortices, so that they can exist over a much wider range
of experimental operating regimes in nematic liquid crystals. Finally, it has been
shown how the stability of an optical vortex depends on the shape of the
liquid crystal cell.
