Description

Uganda’s pig production is mainly managed by women but the marketing of pigs and pork is almost
exclusively done by men as “middlemen”. Middlemen buy pigs directly from farmers(producers) and
sell to retailers(butchers) and wholesalers(abattoirs), therefore significantly control the prices along
the value chain. This control exploites a lack of accessible markert intelligence leading to an unequal
distribution of profits and threatens the growth and sustainability of the industry. To fill this gap, we
propose to characterise the market characteristics in Kampala and the surrounding catchment area,
and then use the data as a foundation for building a free to access mobile phone market intelligence
platform for the value chain. The application builds on our existing Agritech catalys project in Uganda
but brings on board a local software development partner in our ambitions of supporting the
transformation of this sector.
