REAKT - Strategies and tools for Real Time Earthquake Risk Reduction

Project Details

Description

EU FP7 project on real-time forecasting. The overall project aims to improve preparedness for earthquake and tsunami hazard predominantly in Southern Europe. Our role is to evaluate some of the statistical techniques used to determine periods of elevated hazard.

Layman's description

We are working out what to do with geophysical signals as they come in in real time, for example to use detection of a large earthquake near the epicentre to shut down trains before the waves hit, or to inform the public of the level of background hazard and identify periods where this hazard has been elevated due to earthquake clustering.
