Scottish Physical Activity Research Collaboration (SPARColl) Stage 3

Project Details

Description

This is the final, 12-month stage of SPARColl, funded by Scottish Government and managed by NHS Health Scotland, with an overall budget of £112k. The work plan consists of four key strands: older adults; adolescent girls; Advisory Role to NHSHS, the Scottish Government and project leads; knowledge exchange and dissemination.
Stage 1 (£450k total) ran from Jan 2006 - Dec 2008 and Stage 2 (£270k total) from Jan 2009 - Dec 2010. Stage 3 is 2011-12.

The work undertaken by Catharine Ward Thompson and her researchers involves research on older adults and the outdoors. SPARColl expert advisor, Prof Catharine Ward Thompson, is the Director of I'DGO (Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors) a research consortium which particularly focuses on older people. Stage 3 funding supports further analysis of how the physical environment affects older adults’ physical activity levels from data collected but not analysed for Stage 2.

Layman's description

The work undertaken by Catharine Ward Thompson and her researchers involves research on older adults and the outdoors. SPARColl expert advisor, Prof Catharine Ward Thompson, is the Director of I'DGO (Inclusive Design for Getting Outdoors) a research consortium which particularly focuses on older people. Stage 3 funding supports further analysis of how the physical environment affects older adults’ physical activity levels from data collected but not analysed for Stage 2.
The work of SPARColl will contribute directly to advancing knowledge and skills on how to promote physical activity in public sector delivery agencies (local authorities, community planning partnerships, community health partnerships and voluntary sector providers). This work plan will directly and indirectly contribute to the Scottish Government’s key priorities identified in the “Obesity Route Map” and the Active Nations, “On your Marks…Get Set…Go! A Games Legacy for Scotland”.
