The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle (Duke-Edinburgh edition) vols. 32-34

The volumes are produced annually from Duke University Press in Durham, NC and appear in the UK in October each year. Volume 40 will appear in 2012 and will be the subject of a special lecture in the David Hume Tower on 15 November, chaired by the Principal Sir Tim O’Shea.
Each volume is fully edited to the highest modern standards, where possible from the original manuscript, and annotated fully using the resources of editors on both sides of the Atlantic. This is a major international project which has been running since the early 1960s, and Duke University Press have guaranteed that the series will continue till volume 43, which brings the surviving correspondence to the death of Jane Welsh Carlyle in 1866.
The most notable development during these grants, and since, has been the mounting of the Carlyle Letters Online – a fully searchable internet version of text and annotation, which has already achieved a heavy international usage. 35 volumes have been so far mounted on the internet, with financial assistance from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the USA.
