Patient Voices digital stories made with 7 people with early stage dementia and 1 formal carer in a 4 day workshop. Reflective questions relating to the stories were developed from focus groups with staff and a wider multidisciplinary audience. These questions and the stories were then incorporated into an online learning resource for student nurses and people working in health and social care. Evaluation of the impact of using the digital stories to enable nursing students to engage with the experience of people with dementia was carried out with 56 year 1 nursing students on the mental health and adult nursing programmes in a single educational institution.

The usefulness of the digital stories as a way of helping students understand and engage with the experience of people with dementia was evaluated. 56 student nurses who were doing both mental health and adult nursing took part.

Key findings

The students experienced the digital stories as a powerful way of engaging with people with dementia's experiences. Thematic analysis indicated that the stories enabled students to see the person behind the dementia and understand them as more than a diagnosis. The stories also negated many of the misconceptions that students had about the impact of dementia on memory and capacity. The students rated the package as an enjoyable and engaging way to learn about the impact of dementia.
