Abstract
The chapter, placed in the opening section of the volume titled 'Feminist Theories, Techno-capitalism and the 'Cunning of History'', along with chapters by Nancy Fraser, Sara Ahmed, Audre Lorde, Angela McRobbie and Silvia Federici, theorises the two main, and antithetical, positions on technology running through feminism since Shulamith Firestone's work and the second wave. The chapter situates the divide in the history of ideas and dominant ideology. The political fingerprint of accelerationism, questions on the relationship of gender, biology and 'nature', the prospects of 're-purposing' technology that is essential for the reproduction of capitalism, are some of the issues explored. The chapter includes an analysis of Melanie Gilligan's sci fi films as closer to an aesthetic exploration of the antinomies found in feminism's attraction to a progressive techno-capitalism.
