Abstract / Description of output

The section in the J-CLIL Newsletter vol.07 focuses on the role of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) in Japanese and English education in the context of multilingual and multicultural education. Matsumoto-Sturt (pages 11-15) highlights the expansion of CLIL from its origins in Europe, emphasising its application beyond English to Japanese and other European languages such as French, German and Spanish. The discussion underscores the importance of integrating content and language learning across different languages to foster a comprehensive and flexible approach to education.

The paper also explores the potential of CLIL to enhance language teaching by promoting integrated learning environments where Japanese and English are taught alongside other languages. This approach is consistent with the concept of 'pluriliteracies', which involves the simultaneous development of multiple literacies in different languages and cultures. Matsumoto-Sturt also discusses the practical implications of such an integrated approach, including the need for collaboration between language teachers and the adaptation of CLIL methods to the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of students.
