A study of the relationship between David Daube and T. B. Smith, with particular focus on their period as colleagues at Aberdeen University in the early 1950s. The piece also considers their position in relation to the recent experience of World War II and Nazi Germany. An appendix publishes the texts of relevant correspondence between the two men.
