Abstract

We describe the development of a new German parser that uses a hybrid approach, combining a hand-written rule-based grammar with a probabilistic disambiguation system. Our evaluation shows that this parsing approach can compete with state-of-the-art systems both in terms of efficiency and parsing quality. The hybrid approach also allows for the integration of the morphology tool GERTWOL, which leads to a comparatively high precision for core syntactic relations.
