Abstract

The article discusses five stele dedicated to Saturn at Nicivibus. Previously interpreted as testimonies of the existence of old practices of human sacrifice which were gradually abandoned and substituted by offereing of substitute victims, analysis of the inscriptins shows that these monuments should be seen instead as part of a healing ritual performed to ensure the recovery of sick children.
