Abstract / Description of output

This introductory chapter to The Palgrave International Handbook of Gender and the Military sets out the rationale for the collection of chapters which follow. It argues for the significance of the study of gender and the military, seeing this as resting with the nature of militaries as gendered institutions, militaries as sources for understanding gender and militaries as security institutions. The chapter explains the target readership of the book. It then introduces each chapter in turn. It concludes with suggestions for continued and future research.
