Abstract / Description of output

This is the key academic contribution to the first book to consider Kiefer’s photography and use of photographs in his wider artistic practice. The use of photography as both practice and source material is a little-known aspect of Kiefer’s art that has played a central role throughout his career. This book presents over 130 works charting the artist's relationship with photography, and his investigations into what images reveal. It is a revision of an essay first published in the journal Studies in Photography in 2022. A French version of this work also exists in the French catalogue to the first major exhibition on Anselm Kiefer's photography, staged in Lille in 2023. Kiefer is considered by many to be the most important living artist and has been written up as such for the New York Times.
