Abstract
This report presents the findings of a detailed assessment of the state of conservation of the built environment within the Conservation Area of Balfour Village on the island of Shapinsay, Orkney. The study was conducted by the Scottish Centre for Conservation Studies (SCCS) at the University of Edinburgh on behalf of the Orkney Islands Council (OIC) in May-August 2015.
Specifically, this Building and Landscape Study involved a thorough visu al survey of the buildings and streetscape of Balfour Conservation Area as well as, where relevant, other structures in its proximity. The study recorded the characteristics and physical condition of each building, and examined the streetscape and significant panoramic views within the wider landscape context. The resulting data was mapped with the use of Auto CAD and QGIS, providing a comprehensive reference database of the built fabric within Balfour Conservation Area. The report makes recommendations to aid future conservation and regeneration decisions for the Conservation Area as a whole and in more detail for selected significant buildings.
