Abstract

In chapter 30 Niki Vermeulen, Rosalind Attenborough, and Rodrigo Liscovsky discuss the history and contemporary state of Big Biology, and contrast it with Big Physics. The emergence of the former went hand in hand with the formation of large decentralized international networks and was shaped by a social ideology that emphasized the direct applicability of research; whereas the early development of the latter involved huge centralized infrastructures in an environment that placed a premium on the acquisition of fundamental knowledge with no requirement for immediate applications.
