Abstract / Description of output

Astronomy data exploration tools are being continually enhanced and augmented with new capabilities. While this is of great benefit to astronomers, the process does have limitations. The alternative approach is for tools to specialize, but cooperate. This paper discusses how heterogeneous desktop applications can be made to interoperate through a simple protocol called PLASTIC. There are currently more than a dozen PLASTIC-enabled tools, including favorites such as Topcat, Aladin, GAIA, VisIVO and AstroScope.
