Abstract

The Circus Between Worlds’ is anartist-led research project, a temporary sculptural installation, performance programme and learning environment that responds to the idea of ‘circus andcircus school’ within the ruins of the iconic Caledonia Road Church on theedge of the Gorbals in Glasgow. Devised for Glasgow international Festival of visual Art 2016. Delivered in partnership with WAVEparticle the project brought together a diverse troupe of artists, art students and local peoplearound a shared goal to re-inhabit and re-imagine a new future for the church.

The Circus between Worlds is apractice lead research project that investigates methodologies through whichperception and understanding of site can be transformed through creativepractice specifically live art performance.

The project re-imagines a semi derelict historic site withinan are going through rapid urbane re-development and generates a model forre-claiming ownership of a public space through creative practice. The projectbrought together fifty artists and students to evolve a diversity of responsesto the thematic.

The Circus Between Worlds brought together three UKHE institutions: Newcastle University; Edinburgh College of Art (ECA)(Edinburgh University); Glasgow School of Art (GSA). Led by Neil Bromwich(Newcastle) and Zoe Walker (ECA) with PeterMcCaughey, Lecturer/Lead Artist, Environmental Art and Architecture, GSA/ WAVEparticle. The project was part of the award winning Open Spaces initiative developed for Art &Living: Laurieston a creative regeneration partnership generated by Glasgowartists’ group WAVEparticle in partnership with New Gorbals HousingAssociation, Urban Union and the local community of Laurieston. Art &Living is supported by a number of key partners including Network Rail, StalledSpaces and Glasgow City Council Development and Regeneration Services.

Participatingartists include Maria Fusco, Francis Thorburn, David Sherry, Jedrzej Cichosz,Urara Tsuchiya, Richard Whitby, Soin Parkinson with Sooyon Kim , Stasis, EmmaFinn, Edwin Li, Graham Mack, Frankie Burr, Hazel Powell, Peter Jarsdell Ltd,Astrid Newman, Francesca Hawker, LaMalle des Indes Collective, plus studentsfrom Edinburgh College of Art, Glasgow School of Art and Newcastle University.
