Abstract
Anorexia is a common complaint in tortoises and supportive care should be provided while the underlying cause is being investigated. As a minimum, this should include nutritional support and fluid therapy. Oesophagostomy/ pharyngostomy tube placement enables long-term feeding with minimal stress to the animal and client. Fluid therapy can also be given via an oesophagostomy/pharyngostomy tube and by bathing the animals. A full review of the animal's husbandry is an integral part of the investigation into the cause of anorexia. From the outset, the client should be informed that ultimate recovery and self-feeding can be a prolonged process.
