Abstract / Description of output
Cloud Dialogue (G.I.) was conceived as a collaborative sculptural artefact that starts a creative conversation about iron as a contemporary material as well as physically exploring and questioning its immediate installed environment and space. Its individual component forms are multi-configurable and deeper mine the established sculptural vocabulary in iron, some of which lies almost dormant in art thinking but has key and familiar footholds in diverse areas of culture, science and the everyday world. The work creates a non-verbal cloud of objects and images along with their concomitant ideas and associations. It uses iron's ubiquity as a back-door to diverse ideas held within the common consciousness to conjure and juxtapose divergent ideas like blood oxygen regulation, archaeology and stellar formation.
The work also attempts to move beyond the simple aesthetics of the material to probe physical parameters like space, site, use and material specificity expanding and mapping emerging ideas and ground in iron practice as it is reconfigured for a new space.
Cloud Dialogue was previously shown as part of Material Rites at Royal British Society of Sculptors, London / Inspace, University of Edinburgh, 2011 and Dialog - Skulpturale Positionen, Haus Hohenbusch, Erkelenz, Germany in 2011.
The work was jointly conceived, made and installed in collaboration with sculptor Gordon Munro.
Cloud Dialogue (G.I.) was exhibited at Reclaimed: The Second Life of Sculpture as part of the Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2014 on invitation by artist/Curator Kate V. Robertson
