Abstract

This lightning talk focuses on a work in progress – the Transitions Hub. The aim is to create a postgraduate social network to support students in their transition into and through their studies. The network also provides an opportunity to re-connect alumni and facilitate mentoring contacts for current students. This extends the peer support system that is currently part of study at Edinburgh.

This presentation will outline the process of creating the Hub, and provide a brief practical demonstration of the tools. It will feature input from the student champions who have been involved in co-creation of materials and demonstrating best practice through effective use of the system.

To date, the initiative has demonstrated the importance of connecting students and alumni both within their specific programme and to the wider community of practice. Alumni greatly appreciate the invitation to mentor, and students the opportunity to support pre-arrival students. Student and alumni champions are involved in testing and encouraging peer activity on the network, developing digital literacy skills in the process.

As all tools and materials used are open-access, participants will have the necessary information to develop a similar system should they wish. This project was funded by the Higher Education Academy.
