Abstract

The Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, Kolkata, is one of the earliest botanical gardens in the world. Originally founded by a Scot in 1786, it has maintained strong ties with Scotland throughout its history. In recent years the garden has fallen into neglect. However, recently, it has been hit not only by COVID but by the disastrous cyclone Amphlan in March 2020 which brought down hundreds of magnificent trees, adding an additional urgency to its need for regeneration. A vision to restore it is now proposed to ensure that this exceptional horticultural, scientific, heritage and cultural collection is protected for future generations.
This report is prepared as the concluding document to a project operating under an award granted through the University of Edinburgh’s annual Scottish Funding Council Global Challenges Research Fund allocation. The University of Edinburgh Partnerships Fund (UoEPF) has enabled this important Community Participation Scoping Project (CPSP). It operates as a sub-project to the development of a Regeneration and Ecological Framework Plan (REFP) for the garden, endorsing a key ambition of building a ‘shared future’. The REFP has a number of parties driving its formation, particularly the Asia Scotland Trust (AST). Their mission is to engage with creative projects that leave a social, environmental and economic impact and enable people to improve their quality of life. The AST have made it their mission to be responsible for developing and coordinating the REFP.
