Abstract
This essay is a contribution to a special issue of the 'Journal of European Popular Culture' that I was invited to submit. The issue is on 'Warhol and Europe'. My own essay looks at Andy Warhol's engagement with the subject of communism throughout his career. It focuses in particular on his 'Hammer and Sickle' series of works (paintings, photographs, prints) from 1975/1976. These works are usually positioned in relation to US attitudes towards communism; my essay argues for framing the Hammer and Sickle series in relation to Europe.
