Abstract

*Russian edition of A User's guide to Make-Believe.* The novel A User’s Guide to Make-Believe adopts a speculative fiction mode to defamiliarise and interrogate contemporary technology in its exploration of virtual realities. In the context of addiction, grief and mental illness, it investigates the paradox of withdrawing from face-to-face interaction in order to make social connections in abstract, virtual spaces, and the potential for VR to profoundly destabilise categories of real and not-real; it extends discourse around the commodification of self that is integral to commercial VR, and implicitly reflects on the processes of fictional world-building in creative writing by drawing parallels with the creation of immersive virtual worlds.
