Abstract / Description of output

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed educational contexts and practices worldwide, and it has made all educational professionals work in difficult circumstances. Master’s-level English language teacher education (ELTE) programs in the UK are no exception, and they also had to adapt to the pandemic-imposed restrictions. The present chapter focuses on an underexplored module in ELTE—namely, Corpus Linguistics (CL)—which provides current/future English language teachers with the means to develop their language/metalanguage awareness autonomously. The chapter presents and discusses a reflective evaluation of the work required to adapt existing pedagogical practices to the pandemic-imposed restrictions. The role of technology in this adaptation is highlighted both as an opportunity (e.g. the availability of corpora and tools) and as a challenge (e.g. the danger of digital exclusion). Overall, the transition from pre-pandemic on-site CL teaching to while-pandemic online CL teaching was deemed positive. ELTE Master’s students were able to evidence their attainment of the learning outcomes for the focal module, thus indicating their ability to relate CL to their current/future work as English language teachers.
