Crossing Boundaries: Tapestry in the context of the 21st Century

Abstract

My aim in this paper was to highlight the fact that tapestry artists are marginalised because of their srtict adherence to their medium and in order to move forward and be taken seriously, it is necessary to look beyond the confines of your chosen medium. In response to Walter Gropius's declaration that 'We must all turn to Craft' (particularly pertinent because of the Moholy-Nagy/Bauhaus connection), I sugested that now 'We must all turn to Art', because it was artists who were using tapestry in the most interesting and innovative ways.
